DBT-informed therapy in Victoria BC

When emotions spike fast, when you shut down, or when relationships feel like a constant push-pull, it can be exhausting. DBT offers practical skills to help you get back on your feet: emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. In-person downtown Victoria and online across BC.

Approach: Skills training plus real-world practice, blended with trauma-informed and somatic work when helpful.

Helps with

  • Big emotional swings, reactivity, or feeling “too much”
  • Impulsive coping, self-sabotage, or shutdown/avoidance
  • Relationship ruptures from conflict, withdrawal, or misattunement
  • Learning boundaries and asking for what you need more clearly

What to expect

We'll build a toolbox you can rely on: grounding, distress tolerance, emotion regulation plans, and interpersonal scripts for hard conversations. We'll practice in real time and troubleshoot what gets in the way. When trauma is part of the picture, we'll pace the work with care and weave in somatic regulation.

FAQs

  • Is this a DBT group?
No. We'll tailor the skills to your specific goals and the situations you're actually facing.
  • Do I get worksheets?
Yes. I'll provide concise handouts and simple practice plans so you can keep building between sessions.
  • Can we meet online?
Yes. Sessions are available by secure video anywhere in British Columbia, and online works well for skills-based and talk-based work. We'll make sure you have a private, comfortable setup.

What is dialectical behaviour therapy?

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to help people who feel emotions intensely. The "dialectic" is holding two things at once: accepting yourself as you are and working toward change. DBT teaches four groups of skills:

  1. Mindfulness: noticing what's happening without being swept away by it.
  2. Distress tolerance: getting through a crisis moment without making it worse.
  3. Emotion regulation: understanding emotions and reducing how often they take over.
  4. Interpersonal effectiveness: asking for what you need and setting boundaries while protecting relationships.

DBT-informed individual therapy

Comprehensive DBT programs combine weekly skills groups, individual therapy, and between-session coaching. What I offer is DBT-informed individual therapy: we learn and practise the skills one-on-one, tailored to the situations you're actually facing, and blend them with trauma-informed and somatic work when that helps. If a full DBT program would serve you better, I'll help you find one.

How many sessions, and what does it cost?

Skills-focused work often runs for a set number of sessions while you build and practise your toolbox; many people then continue with less frequent check-ins. We'll agree on a plan together.

Cost: Individual sessions are $160 for 50 minutes or $260 for 80 minutes. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors, and you'll receive a receipt after every session. Fees & insurance.
