Couples counselling using EFT and the Gottman Method

When conflict keeps looping or closeness feels far away, we’ll slow things down and help you reach each other again. Drawing on my training in EFT and Gottman Method Couples Therapy, I support you in rebuilding trust, repairing rupture, and improving communication. Together, we move toward deeper connection, renewed trust, and a shared sense of meaning in your relationship.

Session lengths: 60-minute and 90-minute options • Location: 620 View St., Suite 520 (downtown Victoria) • Online: Across BC.

Marriage & relationship counselling in Victoria

Whether you're married, common-law, engaged, or dating, the work is the same: understanding the cycle you keep getting caught in and building the skills to find your way back to each other. Couples often come to marriage counselling after an affair or betrayal, during a stretch of constant conflict or distance, when one partner is unsure about staying, or ahead of a big transition like a new baby, a move, or retirement. You don't need to wait for a crisis.

Gottman Method couples therapy: I'm certified in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Levels 1 & 2), which gives us practical, research-based tools for managing conflict, repairing after hurts, and strengthening friendship and intimacy. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): helps us slow down the pattern and understand the attachment needs underneath it.

If one partner is hesitant: it's okay for one of you to book the free consultation first. Online couples therapy: couples anywhere in British Columbia can meet with me by secure video. Learn about online counselling.

Common goals

  • Reduce escalations and rebuild safer communication
  • Repair after betrayals, ruptures, or chronic disconnection
  • Rebuild intimacy, friendship, and closeness
  • Navigate parenting stress, life transitions, or blended-family dynamics
  • Create clearer agreements around conflict, boundaries, and needs

How sessions work

I combine EFT (which helps us understand the emotions and attachment needs underneath conflict) with Gottman tools (practical skills, repair attempts, and rituals of connection). My job is to slow the cycle, keep things regulated, and help you both stay engaged.

Session lengths: 60-minute sessions can work well for ongoing support; 90-minute sessions give more time to settle, go deeper, and practice new skills in-session.

FAQs

  • Will you take sides?
No. I don't do “who's right.” I focus on the relationship and the cycle you're both getting pulled into. I will be clear and direct when something is harmful, and I'll help you understand what's underneath it.
  • Do we get homework?
Often, yes. It shouldn't feel like a second job; it's meant to help you build new patterns where it matters: at home.
  • Can we meet online?
Yes. Online can work very well for couples, especially when we have a clear plan for turn-taking, pauses, and regulation.
  • Is Gottman the same as EFT?
They're different, and they complement each other beautifully. EFT helps us understand the emotional/attachment needs under the conflict. Gottman adds structure and skills (repairs, communication tools, and relationship “habits” that support closeness). We'll use what fits you.

What happens in the first couples session

We'll start with what's bringing you in, how each of you sees the problem, and what you hope will be different. I'll ask about your history together, what's working, and the pattern you keep getting caught in. You'll leave with a clearer picture of that cycle and a sense of how we'll work on it.

I keep sessions balanced so both of you feel heard, and I'll slow things down if a conversation starts to escalate.

Repairing after an affair or betrayal

Discovering an affair or a serious breach of trust can feel like the ground has gone out from under you. Couples therapy gives the hurt partner space to be heard, helps the partner who broke trust take real responsibility, and, when you both choose to rebuild, creates a structured path to new agreements and renewed closeness. If you're still deciding whether to stay, we can work on getting clarity first.

How many sessions, and what does it cost?

Many couples come weekly or every other week at first, then space sessions out as things settle. Couples in crisis, or recovering from betrayal, often benefit from longer 90-minute sessions.

Cost: Couples sessions are $185 for 60 minutes or $275 for 90 minutes. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors, and you'll receive a receipt after every session. Fees & insurance.
