EMDR therapy for trauma, PTSD, and complex PTSD

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that can help you process traumatic experiences that continue to affect your emotions, body, and sense of safety. It works by supporting your brain’s natural ability to reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional intensity and feel more firmly in the past. Over time, this can reduce symptoms such as anxiety, intrusive memories, and emotional overwhelm, allowing you to feel more grounded and resilient.

Who EMDR helps

  • Single-incident trauma (accidents, assaults, medical events)
  • Complex trauma and attachment wounds
  • Intrusive memories, nightmares, startle responses, and hypervigilance
  • Shutdown, numbness, or feeling “not here” (freeze)
  • Burnout with trauma features (overdrive, collapse, or both)

How we work

We start with stabilization. When you're ready, we'll reprocess memories in small, manageable pieces (titration), staying within your window of tolerance.

Session options: 50-minute sessions, or 80-minute extended sessions when a longer window feels helpful for EMDR work.

FAQs

  • Is EMDR safe?
Yes. I don't rush into reprocessing. We build resourcing and containment first, and we move at a speed your nervous system can handle. If something feels too much, we slow down, stabilize, and adjust.
  • Do you offer intensive/longer sessions?
Yes. I offer 80-minute sessions if you'd like more time for preparation, reprocessing, and integration in a single appointment. We'll decide together whether longer sessions are a good fit for you.
  • Can we meet online?
Yes. Many people find online EMDR works well, especially when you can be in a familiar space. We'll make sure you have a setup that feels private and supportive.
  • Do you combine EMDR with other approaches?
Often, yes. I frequently weave in somatic regulation, parts/attachment awareness, and CBT/DBT skills so you have practical tools alongside the deeper processing work. The goal is integration.

What to expect in EMDR therapy

EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase approach. We don't start with your hardest memory. The early sessions are about getting to know you and building the resources you'll lean on during processing.

  1. History and planning: what brings you in and which memories or triggers we'll target.
  2. Preparation: grounding, calm-place and containment skills so you can settle yourself.
  3. Assessment: we identify the image, belief, emotion and body sensation linked to a memory.
  4. Desensitization: bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping or tones) while the memory loses its charge.
  5. Installation and body scan: strengthening a more helpful belief and clearing leftover tension.
  6. Closure and re-evaluation: ending each session steady and checking progress next time.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

It depends on what we're working with. A single recent event may resolve in a handful of processing sessions, while complex or childhood trauma usually needs more preparation and a longer course of therapy. We'll review progress together regularly, and you're always in charge of the pace.

Longer sessions: 80-minute sessions give more room to prepare, process and close a session calmly, which many people find helpful for EMDR.

Cost: Individual sessions are $160 for 50 minutes or $260 for 80 minutes. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors, and you'll receive a receipt after every session. Fees & insurance.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a related, eye-movement-based approach that uses guided imagery to help change how distressing memories and images are held, often in fewer sessions and without needing to describe every detail out loud. I'm trained in ART and may suggest it alongside or instead of EMDR when it fits your goals.
